USB - IF Device Class Documents

The Device Class Working group has created the following set of revision definitions for their documents. If you are interested in working on a Device Class document you should contact the chairman for that document. The contact information for the chairpersons is listed with each document. The current set of Defined 1.0 Class Codes is available here.

Approved Class Specification Documents

Approved Class Specifications are those that have officially reached Version 1.0 status and are usable to design products. The documents describe one or more classes, identified by a Class Code. Devices and interfaces which implement a class must use this Class Code (e.g. in the bInterfaceClassfield). Each Approved Class Specification defines the appropriate values for SubClass and Protocol for the class(es) it defines.

Draft Class Specification Documents

Draft Class Specifications are any Version 0.9 documents. Draft Class Specifications are made available separately to avoid any confusion on which documents are usable to design products. 0.9 Device Working Group has what they believe to be complete description of class and the document is ready for public comment. As the document is updated to reflect that input the revision changes from .9a to .9b and so on.

Earlier Versions
Content for the following versions is no longer posted. A description is included here for your reference:

  • Version 0.8 - 0.8 Device Working Group has what they believe to be a complete description of class and they now wish review from the entire Device Working Group. As document is updated to reflect that input the revision changes from .8a to .8b and so on.

  • Version 0.7 - Reflects input from members of the Class Working Group. As document is updated the revision changes from .7a to .7b and so on.

  • Version 0.6 - Concept document -- one person's idea for a new class. Used to garner interest with other USB I/F members to create a Class Working Group.
